A pottery studio where skilled hands, wood fire, and natural materials create functional ceramics
Jordan Taylor's Ashton Pottery studio embraces the collaborative intensity of wood firing, where multi-day kiln sessions and natural ash glazes create surfaces impossible to replicate. Each handmade piece connects centuries of ceramic tradition with the transformative potential of fire and clay.
Jordan Taylor
Jordan Taylor is a wood-fired ceramics artist with 25 years of experience who creates functional pottery using indigenous clays and natural ash glazes, informed by a deep connection to fluid dynamics from whitewater paddling. After earning a MFA from RISD and working with artist Theaster Gates in Chicago, Jordan established Ashton Pottery in Maryland as a wood-fired kiln and studio.

"Taylor’s love of clay is palpable, almost religious, and it is interesting because it is not based on what comes out of a pug mill; rather, it is more about an existential view of clay and its place, literally, in the greater world." — Garth Clark

Wood fired ceramics welcomes variability and uncertainty. The kiln is fired for 2-10 days with someone tending the kiln 24 hrs a day. The natural draft of the kiln pulls the flame and ash from the wood through the kiln at 2000°F and above; the wood ash melts on the pots creating a natural glaze.
